Applications

Both the ICEOtherm and benepod are devices designed to engage the body’s natural healing abilities using a combination of hot and cold stimuli.

The combined hot and cold stimuli offered by ICEOtherm and benepod induces a paradoxical burning sensation known as the Thermal Grill Illusion. The Thermal Grill Illusion has been known to scientists for over a century, and was developed and first studied extensively by scientists in 1896. In scientific research applications, the thermal grill is used to create harmless sensations of pain, however by applying both mild heat and cooling to the areas of chronic pain and creating an intense stimulation, the resulting effect blocks and confuses the pain messages going to the brain, allowing many patients to experience safe, drug free pain relief.

The Benefits of ICEOtherm® and benepod®

ICEOtherm and benepod have been proven most successful in treating localized and chronic pain, as opposed to short term, acute pain, or diffuse pain that is felt over a large area and can’t be localized. Conditions that patients often visit chiropractors, physiotherapists, or use other types of self-healing treatments for could benefit from the use of these products. Typical chronic pain symptoms that could be aided by ICEOtherm or benepod include:

  • ・Osteoarthritis of the Hands
  • ・Lower back pain
  • ・Chronic Tendonitis Conditions
  • ・Chronic musculoskeletal Pain
  • ・Neuropathic Pain
  • ・Plantar Fasciitis
  • ・Headaches

These devices are not a cure, they provide temporary pain relief and in many cases will eliminate, or reduce, the drug dependency for the people using it.

benepod Vs ICEOtherm

The benepod and ICEOtherm units offering combined hot and cold stimuli work in the same manner, the main difference being size. The ICEOtherm offers relief to a smaller, more targeted area (knuckles and smaller joints), whereas the benepod can offer relief to a larger area (lower back or shoulder).

In addition, the benepod is also offered in a hot only, or cold only version for patients only requiring one type of treatment. The heated benepod could help increase circulation and offer relief in the same way a hot pad would, whereas the cooling benepod could be used in place of an ice pack to reduce inflammation or swelling.

What Is Pain?

Pain is an intensely unpleasant sensory response to a physical action or event that tells you something may be wrong in an area of your body. It is the nervous system’s mechanism to alert your brain that action must be taken as quickly as possible to protect the body from continuing symptoms, to avoid undue harm and to alleviate the feeling.

Your spinal cord and nerves provide the pathway for messages to travel to and from your brain and the other parts of your body. Receptor nerve cells in and beneath your skin sense heat, cold, light, touch, pressure, and pain. You have thousands of these receptor cells. Most sense pain and the fewest sense cold. When there is an injury to your body (surgery for example) these tiny cells send messages along nerves into your spinal cord and then up to your brain. Pain medicine blocks these messages or reduces their effect on your brain.

There are 2 types of pain: acute and chronic. Acute pain is a symptom of a medical problem, illness or injury, and is only temporary, it doesn’t last long and usually goes away as your body heals. Chronic pain is more than a symptom, it is an actual illness or medical problem that persists beyond the healing phase, usually three to six months. This type of pain does not respond to traditional medical treatment, such as rest, medicine, injections, physical therapy or surgery. With time, the pain may spread and increase in intensity.

Pain is one of the most common ailments known to man, and every person responds differently to pain. According to The American Chronic Pain Association, approximately 35% of adults have some element of chronic pain, and more than half of these are disabled partially or totally due to chronic pain.
